Here is what is going on around the county this weekend.
Sweet Wars on tap today
SEBRING - Highlands County residents will have the opportunity to tempt their taste buds today when Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care and Michael L.
Keiber, PA present Sweet Wars 2013.
The culinary event, where chefs compete with treats, will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Bert J. Harris, Jr. Agricultural Center, 4509 George Blvd.
The competition pits chefs and dining staff from the area's assisted living and nursing facilities in a bake-off to see who makes the best desserts. Chefs and their facilities will compete in three categories: Spirit Award, Booth Design and Overall Winner. Winners are determined by ballot vote.
The public is invited to support hospice and sample the sweets by purchasing a $5 ballot. Proceeds will benefit the Cornerstone Hospice Foundation.
The event is made possible in part by a sponsorship from Comfort Keepers.

LP High homecoming this morning
LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid High School Homecoming Parade will be held at 10 a.m. today.
It will start at the school, go around the circle and up Interlake Boulevard.
The Student Government Association will have a float in the parade honoring Manna Ministries and will be accepting food donations along the parade route.
Broken Roads concert
SEBRING - Broken Roads, a country/rock band, will perform at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Circle Theatre.

Reception slated for psychedelic artist
SEBRING - Patty Lloyd's fractal psychedelic photography will be shown on metal, wood, canvas, framed prints, note cards and postcards at both the Heartland Cultural Alliance gallery and Sebring Regional Airport gallery.
An opening celebration will be held 5-7 p.m. tonight at the airport.
The show will open with a '60s theme party. Everyone is encouraged to wear clothes reflecting the era, such as bell bottoms, sandals, tie-dyes, skinny ties, miniskirts, boots, head bands, berets and more.
Those dressed up will be entered for a chance to win a pizza from Papa John's and a special prize from the artist.
Background music from the Beach Boys and others will be played from old 45 vinyl records. Refreshments will be served. It is free to the public.

Annual 5K, family festival slated
LAKE PLACID - The Mason G. Smoak Foundation will host its fifth annual 5K and Family Fun Festival Saturday in DeVane Park.
The day will begin at 8 a.m. with a 5K race featuring a 4-H color splash for non-competitive runners. Family Fun Walk will begin at 9 a.m. and the Family Fun Festival will run through 1 p.m.
The first 500 runners will receive a commemorative medal.
The festival portion will feature hands-on exhibits, games for kids, food and much more.
Benefits from the event support the Mason G. Smoak Foundation. One of its programs, Youth Leadership Highlands will begin its third year this fall, exposing local students to different businesses and developing their leadership skills.
The foundation also award five scholarship annually to graduating seniors in the area.

Yard sale to benefit 15-month-old
SEBRING - A fundraiser yard sale to benefit Team Maddie will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at 3760 Sebring Parkway.
Maddie is 15-month-old with cerebral palsy and Angelman Syndrome. You can follow Maddie's progress on Facebook at Maddie Lane's Journey.
Therapy Thru Plants sale
AVON PARK - The Therapy Thru Plants sale will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Avon Park Correctional Institution on S.R. 64.
Native and tropical plants, as well as orchids, will be sold.
All proceeds will go towards supplying the needs to continue the nursery program at APCI.

3 Christian bands performing
SEBRING - The Come to the River Tour, featuring Christian bands Rush of Fools, All Things New and the Rhett Walker Band, will be held outside at 7 p.m. Saturday on North Ridgewood Drive.
Concessions will be available. Bring your own chair. There is no cost.

Music on the Mall
AVON PARK - The first Music on the Mall concert will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the Bandstand on the Mall on Main Street, Avon Park.
It will feature Erin Sena and the Broken Road band.
Popcorn, barbecue and blueberry desserts will be sold. Many stores will remain open during the duration of the concert. Admission is free.
The event is sponsored by Main Street CRA, the Avon Park Breakfast Rotary, Winn Dixie and 18 East Restaurant.
