AP election qualify dates set

AVON PARK - The qualifying period for the candidates for mayor and one city council seat in Avon Park will begin at 8 a.m., July 29 and end at 5 p.m., Aug. 9. The election will be held Nov. 5 for the mayoral seat currently held by Sharon Schuler and the council seat currently held by Parke Sutherland. Schuler said Thursday that she "hasn't decided yet" about running for reelection. She has served a total of 18 years in office and is currently serving in her seventh year as mayor.
The mayor and council seats are three-year terms, but Schuler noted, they were two-year terms when she was initially elected to the city council. Schuler explained she is in her seventh year as mayor because she succeeded former mayor Tom Macklin when he resigned with about one year remaining in his term. To qualify for the Nov. 5 election, the candidate must have resided within the city limits for the past six months, be a legally qualified voter for the City of Avon Park and be current in all payments to the city. Qualifying packets may be picked up at City Hall prior to the qualification period. Qualifying may be done at the city clerk's office in the Avon Park City Hall, 110 E. Main St. during the qualifying period 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The City of Avon Park reports that voter registration books will remain open until Oct. 7. Questions about voter registration and absentee ballots should be directed to the Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Office at 863-402-6655.
