SEBRING — Mike Welborn, a former West Sebring Volunteer firefighter from 1996 to 2005, received the Life Saver’s award and pin in 2003 for helping to save the life of a driver of a vehicle involved in an accident in Golf Hammock.
Now, Welborn needs help from the community he served, to save his own life since being diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
“Mike was always a good firefighter, but mostly, a good, well-rounded person, too,” said Scott Mann, chief of West Sebring Volunteer Fire Department. “He always had a smile on his face and was very active in the youth baseball program of Sebring.”
Welborn left the department in 2005 to spend more time with family and pursue a new career.
Mann is asking for donations for Welborn and his family, since medical expenses have soared and they have exhausted their savings.
“It’s just the right thing to do for a former brother,” said Assistant Fire Chief Billy Kingston. “We would do it for a present member and especially this past member, and we always stick together as a family.”
Donations should be send to: West Sebring VFD Station 10, 3517 Hammock Road, Sebring, FL 33872; reference the Mike Welborn Cancer Fund.
