Alzheimer’s workshop set for caregivers

— Living with Alzheimer’s, a workshop for the early-stage caregiver, will be held 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 11, 18 and 25 at Faith Lutheran Church, 2740 Lakeview Drive.

In the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, families face new questions as they adjust. What does the diagnosis mean? What kind of plans need to be made? What resources are available to help?

Join the Alzheimer’s Association for this three-part series to learn practical answers to the questions that arise in the early stages. Hear from those directly affected and learn what you can do to cope with the changes. For more information call 385-3444.

CPR class to benefit Bonecutter

— The Lake Placid Police Department will hold a CPR class at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Holiday Inn Express with all the proceeds going to Marlo Bonecutter for her upcoming medical procedure.

A full class consists of 24 students. Anyone who attends and donates $100 will receive a pocket mask to keep in their car. Preregister at the Lake Placid Police Department.

Back-to-school Splash Day set

— Memorial United Methodist Church wants to kick off the new school year with a day of fun.

Everyone is invited to the 10:45 a.m. worship Aug. 17. At noon, there will be activities for youth and children: a water balloon launcher, huge inflatable water slides, music and free lunch.

The Sonshine Clubhouse will reopen after months of renovation. A school supply drive will also take place.

‘Good Dog’ course set at YMCA

— The Highlands County YMCA will offer a summer dog obedience and behavioral class, “Good Dog,” at 4 p.m. Aug. 23. The six-week course will meet every Saturday for one hour. It is held under full cover and is fenced.

Good Dog is geared toward dogs of all ages and breeds.

The course will focus on manners, obedience and behavioral issues. Some exercises will include walking on a loose lead, heel, sit and stay, down and stay, stand and stay, come and more. The AKC Canine Good Citizen Test will be available afterward.

A local class field trip will allow you and your dog to utilize techniques learned in a positive and safe setting.

The course is $60 and all dogs must be current on their vaccines. Space is limited. Call Monica at 655-9080.

Placid Lakes group updates on activities

— The Paddlewheel Dinner/Dance Cruise is set to sail Aug. 9.

The bus will be at the Winn-Dixie (formerly SweetBay) South No. 27 at 2 p.m. to pick up Sebring passengers. The bus will then go to the Lake Placid Publix parking lot for Lake Placid passengers at 2:30 p.m. It will proceed to Fort Myers for 5 p.m. boarding and tickets.

There will be a regular meeting of the PLSC on Thursday at the Placid Lakes Country Club starting at 4 p.m.

The Christmas Light Cruise out of Fishermen’s Village will be held Dec. 8. The trip includes the bus fare, dinner at the Village Fish Market Restaurant and the light cruise to Punta Gorda Isles. The price is $50 per person and may be paid by check or credit card. Call Susie for sign-up information at 699-0886.

The Lake Placid Ballroom Dancers will have their annual Luau on Aug. 16.

Town Hall office is now open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday.
