Veterans Day parade, ceremony SEBRING -The Veterans Day parade and ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11 in downtown Sebring. The event is sponsored by the Veteran's Council of Highlands County. The parade will start at the American Legion Post 74, at 528 N Pine St., go down Ridgewood Drive, through part of the Circle and end at the Highlands County Courthouse, on Commerce Avenue. There will be a guest speaker.
The public is invited to enter a float. There is no entry fee and the deadline to register is Sunday. It is sponsored by downtown merchants. Purple Heart wreath ceremony, poker run scheduled SEBRING- A Purple Heart wreath laying ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Veteran's Beach, and the public is invited to attend. The event is sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 601. That is followed by an all veterans poker run at 10:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 74 in Sebring, at 528 N Pine St. Post 74 is hosting the event. Registration is at the Post and will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. The last bike in is at 4 p.m. The day's activities will culminate with the Sebring Cruiser Car Show at 2 p.m. in downtown Sebring. Fred Wild slates Veterans Day ceremony SEBRING - Fred Wild Elementary School will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 9 a.m. Nov. 8 in the school's courtyard. Students have prepared songs, poetry and speeches for this event. All veterans are invited. Cornerstone Hospice to honor vets LAKE PLACID - Several years ago, Cornerstone Hospice joined the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs for a program focused on "respectful inquiry, compassionate listening and grateful acknowledgment of veterans," We Honor Veterans. Cornerstone Hospice invites the community to its Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at Lake Placid Health Care Center, 125 Tomoka Blvd. S., to honor those who have served and their families. Cracker Trail Elementary program SEBRING- Veterans will be honored with music and speech at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 at Cracker Trail Elementary. All grades will sing and short speeches will be given by various students. Highlands County School Superintendent Wally Cox will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Sebring VFW Post 4300, under Honor Guard Commander Bob Ryan, will present the flags and perform the 21-gun salute and Taps. If you are a veteran or are currently in the service and would like to attend, call the school at 471-5777. All parents are invited. Veterans Day Remembrance at SFSC AVON PARK -A ceremony to honor all military veterans will be held at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the flagpole on the South Florida College Highlands Campus. The public is invited to attend. The program includes opening welcome by Thomas Leitzel, president, SFSC, and remarks by SFSC student veterans and Rep. Cary Pigman. The Avon Park High School AFJROTC Color Guard; Knight of Columbus Color Corp, SFSC Performing Arts Club, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9853 will also be present during the ceremony. Free 'musical salute' to veterans SEBRING -The Heartland Pops will hold a free "Musical Salute to Veterans" at 7 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Sebring, 200 E. Center Ave., Sebring. It will feature guest conductor Cmdr. Allan Beck, retired from Navy Band. Donations will be appreciated. Veterans events set three days in Avon Park AVON PARK- Events to honor veterans will take place three days in Avon Park. Grilling for the Vets will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Williams Gray Court neighborhood, in the south side of Elberta Crate Co. There will be games, plenty of food and a representative from Veteran's Affairs in Miami on hand to answer any questions veterans may have. Everyone is invited. Those wishing to bring a grill to cook for vets or themselves are welcome to do so. On Sunday, the community is invited to participate in fellowship with veterans by inviting them to church, to their house for lunch, etc. Walking for Veterans will start at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the corner of 202 C. Love St and Williams Gray Court, in front of St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church. The walk will continue to Strong Street to Southside Veterans Gardens at Tulane Drive and Verona Avenue. There will be a ceremony, songs and an Avon Park firefighter will lower the flag promptly at 11 a.m. If you cannot walk to the gardens, you may drive there. These events are being put on by residents of Avon Park.
