Veterans Day activities

Veterans Day is Monday and there are several activities that have been planned throughout the weekend. Highlands Today has compiled a list. Tea Party plans flag wave SEBRING- The Highlands Tea Party will hold a Veterans Day flag wave from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Boom Boom's Guns and Ammo, 330 U.S. 27 N. Good Shepherd Hospice honors veterans
SEBRING- Good Shepherd Hospice will honor patients who have served in all branches of the United States military 8 a.m. Monday at the hospice, 1110 Hammock Road, Sebring. The event will include the raising of the American flag by the Sebring High School Jr. ROTC; the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton; the National Anthem and patriotic songs sung by Good Shepherd Hospice Chief Clinical Officer Becky McIntyre; and Veterans Day remarks from Veterans Service Officer Carol West. Good Shepherd Hospice patients who are veterans and physically able will attend the event and receive special recognition. Lake Country Elementary Celebrates Veterans Day LAKE PLACID -Lake Country Elementary School will honor veterans and active duty military at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the P.E. area. Students will present special music, poems, and routines to honor those who fight for our freedom. Veterans and active duty military would like to attend, should call Mrs. Frey at 699-5050, Ext. 100. All parents are also invited. State parks free on Veterans Day TALLAHASSEE-The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is celebrating Veterans Day with free park entry for everyone at state parks on Monday. As the newest member of the park system, residents will be able to enjoy free entry to Silver Springs State Park in Ocala for the first time. VFW Post 3880 plans four days of events LAKE PLACID- VFW Post 3880 has planned a Veterans Day celebration Friday through Monday. The event will kick off with a Poppy Drive 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Monday, the post will be open to the public all day. Snacks will be served in the afternoon. Barbecue ribs, potato bar and dessert will be serve 5:30-7 p.m. Cost is $10 for a half rack. Music will be provided 5:30-9 p.m. by Lou and Connie. To reserve your meal, call 699-5444 by 8 p.m. Friday. Donations of nonperishable foods would be appreciated. Veterans events set three days in Avon Park AVON PARK- Events to honor veterans will take place three days in Avon Park. Grilling for the Vets will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Williams Gray Court neighborhood, in the south side of Elberta Crate Co. in Avon Park by Memorial Drive. There will be games, plenty of food and a representative from Veteran's Affairs in Miami on hand to answer any questions veterans may have. Everyone is invited. Those wishing to bring a grill to cook for vets or themselves are welcome to do so. On Sunday, the community is invited to participate in fellowship with veterans by inviting them to church, to their house for lunch, etc. Walking for Veterans will start at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the corner of 202 C. Love St. and Williams Gray Court, in front of St. John's Missionary Baptist Church. The walk will continue to Strong Street to Southside Veterans Gardens at Tulane Drive and Verona Avenue. There will be a ceremony, songs and an Avon Park firefighter will lower the flag promptly at 11 a.m. If you cannot walk to the gardens, you may drive there. These events are being put on by residents of Avon Park. Bob Evans announces free hotcakes for vets SEBRING -Veterans and active military personnel will receive free all-you-can-eat hotcakes at Bob Evans restaurants on Veterans Day, Monday. Servicemen and women will have to show a valid military ID. Guests must provide proof of service, including: U.S. Uniform Services identification card, U.S. Uniform Services Retired identification card, Current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), veterans organization card (like American Legion and VFW) or wearing uniform. Bob Evans has a restaurant in Sebring, located at 2541 U.S. 27. Sun 'n Lake Elementary hosts Veterans Day program SEBRING - Sun 'n Lake Elementary School will be hosting a Veterans Day program to honor those who have served, those who are serving and family members of veterans at 9 a.m. Monday. The day is open to the public and will be complete with patriotic songs and presentation to honor veterans. Veterans are also encouraged to attend the Fuel Up to Play 60 Hero's breakfast at 7:30 am before the presentation for students. Veterans Day parade, ceremony set SEBRING -The Veterans Day parade and ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday in downtown Sebring. The event is sponsored by the Veteran's Council of Highlands County. The parade will start at the American Legion Post 74, at 528 N Pine St., go down Ridgewood Drive, through part of the Circle and end at the Highlands County Courthouse, on Commerce Avenue. There will be a guest speaker. The public is invited to enter a float. There is no entry fee and the deadline to register is Sunday. It is sponsored by downtown merchants. Purple Heart wreath ceremony, poker run scheduled SEBRING- A Purple Heart wreath laying ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Veteran's Beach, and the public is invited to attend. The event is sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 601. That is followed by an all veterans poker run at 10:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 74 in Sebring, at 528 N Pine St. Post 74 is hosting the event. Registration is at the Post and will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. The last bike in is at 4 p.m. The day's activities will culminate with the Sebring Cruiser Car Show at 2 p.m. in downtown Sebring. Fred Wild slates Veterans Day ceremony SEBRING - Fred Wild Elementary School will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 9 a.m. Nov. 9 in the school's courtyard. Students have prepared songs, poetry and speeches for this event. All veterans are invited. Cornerstone Hospice to honor vets LAKE PLACID - Cornerstone Hospice invites the community to its Veterans Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Lake Placid Health Care Center, 125 Tomoka Blvd. S., to honor those who have served and their families. Cracker Trail Elementary program SEBRING- Veterans will be honored with music and speech at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 at Cracker Trail Elementary. All grades will sing and short speeches will be given by various students. Highlands County School Superintendent Wally Cox will lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Sebring VFW Post 4300, under Honor Guard Commander Bob Ryan, will present the flags and perform the 21-gun salute and Taps.
