Wells car show to kick off Race Week

AVON PARK - For the 17th year, Wells Motor Co., 1600 U.S. 27 S., will kick off its annual car show, Speedweek, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Admission and parking is free. The Avon Park High School Band will provide the refreshments.

There will be interactive activities, special attractions and more than 200 custom and classic cars are expected to show.

"Not only is this the oldest annual car show in the area, it is one of the few shows that has featured special guests or features each year, such as Marvin Panch, Richard Petty's 1974 Championship Dodge Charger or the class-winning Dodge Viper from the 24 Hours of LeMans," a news release states.

This year, the Pace Car from the 12 Hours of Sebring will be showcased, and a representative will talk about the new cars that will be competing at Sebring, the news release adds.

"The same race cars and drivers that you saw compete in the Daytona 24-hour race will be competing on the 3.7-mile road course in Sebring for the first time," it states.

John Dean, one of the top drivers in the national Playboy Mazda Series, will sign autographs. One of his race cars will be on hand.

Anyone with a classic or custom vehicle is invited to participate. There is no entry fee and no judging.

Rods, classics, antiques and race cars are welcome. For information, call the dealership at 453-6644.
