The Avon Park, Lake Placid and Sebring boys and girls tennis teams are in action today in their respective district tournaments.
The district champion and runner-up earn automatic spots in next week’s regional competition.
The Avon Park and Lake Placid boys are competing at Avon Park High School in the Class 2A-District 9 tournament against stiff competition from Auburndale, Hardee, Lake Wales, Mulberry, Poinciana and Tenoroc.
The Red Devil and Green Dragon girls are set to play in Auburndale against the same schools.
The Sebring boys and girls will compete in the Class 3A-District 10 tournament at the Beerman Family Tennis Center in Lakeland.
The Blue Streak girls have had a solid season posting an impressive 11-2 record and have an excellent chance of finishing in the top two spots to advance to next week’s regionals.
Sebring will compete against Bartow, Lakeland George Jenkins, Haines City, Lakeland Kathleen, Lake Gibson, Lake Region, Lakeland High, Ridge Community and Winter Haven.
“We’ve had a good season and the girls have been working really hard on their games,” said veteran Sebring girls tennis coach Janie Hollinger. “We’re in a very tough district with several strong teams, but the girls are excited about competing and we’re looking for a good showing.”
The Sebring boys have had a solid season with an 11-2 record against some tough competition.
“We’ve played some good teams during the season and managed to win our share,” said Sebring boys tennis coach Jack Holt. “The boys have shown a lot of improvement during the season and I think we’re playing our best tennis of the season.
“We know we’ll have to play well to finish in the top two, but if the boys stay focused and play smart, I think we have a good chance to move on to the regionals.”
