It’s been a busy stretch for some members of the Highlands Hurricanes Swim Team, as a number of championship meets have been taking place.
The Florida Age Group Championships kicked things off between July 17 and July 20 at the University of Florida’s O’ Connell Center in Gainesville, as the Hurricanes had three swimmers qualify for the event. Peyton Ming qualified in six events and Griffin Chynoweth and Anna Sapp both qualified for four events in the meet, which had more than 60 teams and 1,000 swimmers.
Ming finished 29th or better in all six events and placed in the top 16 in two events, finishing 15th in the 50-meter butterfly in a time of 35.59 and was 16th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:25.16.
Sapp finished 36th or better in her four events, and had a 27th-place finish in the 50 butterfly with a time of 33.84. Chynoweth had a pair of top 20 finishes, placing 19th in the 50 freestyle in 27.99 and 20th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.87.
The Florida Summer Senior Swimming Championships took place at Indian River State College in Ft. Pearce between July 24 and July 27 and the Hurricanes were represented by three swimmers; Andrew Brown, Shannon Cummings and Mégan Wolfe. More than 50 teams sent nearly 550 swimmers to the event.
Brown qualified for six events and had a 23rd-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:16.46. Wolfe qualified in five events and placed 30th in the 50 freestyle in a time of 28.76 and Cummings qualified to compete in four events and placed 49th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.56.
