Recreational spring softball leagues are under way
SEBRING Last seasonís Recreation League B winners, the Wild Turkey Tavern team, have moved up to the A league this season. They beat 10 teams in the Winter League to claim the championship in April. Their competitors in the Spring Recreation A League will be eight other teams of experienced athletes. Mike Parker, coach for Wild Turkey, is hopeful that they will play as well this time as they did last season to earn the top spot again. Parker has been playing baseball since he was 4 years old and he loves the chance to play at the Highlands County Sports Complex. ďThe game is fun and good exercise and a chance to get out here with the guys,Ē he said. ďI can tell you this: Iíve played in several tournaments all over the state of Florida and this is the nicest complex maintenance-wise that we have played in.ĒHe is grateful for his sponsors, Mike and Katie Reark, owners of the Wild Turkey Tavern, for supporting the team. The spring games kicked off on May 13 and will continue for the next few months. The Recreation B League, which is played Tuesday nights along with the Recreation A League games, is made up of 10 teams. Thursday nights, the eight teams that make up the Church League compete. And the Womenís League, which has now grown to five teams, gets together on Monday nights to play their games. Games start at 6:45 and 8 p.m. and spectators are always encouraged to attend and check out the action.
