SEBRING - For the first time this season the home team did not win the Women's Heartland Interclub competition. The monthly tournament attracted 79 players who enjoyed competing on the tight and demanding Golf Hammock course. "We had a good day and our ladies played well," said Golf Hammock Country Club professional Pete DuPriest. "You have to hit the ball straight to score on this course and we finished second by just one shot.
"Most of the teams played well and were plus points, the course was in good shape and we got a lot of compliments from the golfers." The monthly Interclub tournaments have women's and men's teams from all of the area golf clubs play 18 holes at a different course each month with the first-half winners playing the second-half winners for the overall championship. "This is a great series that the women really enjoy," DuPriest sad. "They love competing and have a lot of fun. "We're in third place right now in the standings with two events left in the first half of the season and we have a chance to move up if we play well." The tournament used a point quota system and the First Flight was won by Mickie Edwards, who won $23.60 for finishing first at +15. Nan Reno came in second at +5, Ronna Mason was third with +4 and Beverly Phillips came in fourth at +3. In the Second flight, Susan Ellison finished first at +7, Jody Ethun and Dee Paul tied for second place at +6 and Deb Morgan came in fourth with +5. Sonya Spatafore won the Third flight with +14, Gina Scheck was second at +10, Judy Dunn came in third with +8 and Eleanor O'Neal finished fourth with +6. In the Fourth Flight, Carol Troup of Golf Hammock was first with +7, Marilyn Brewer placed second at +4 and Diana Coghill, Becky Lavergne, Judy Pfiester and Judy Trier tied at +3. Highlands Ridge South came in seventh in the team standings with +14, Country Club of Sebring was +11, Highlands Ridge North came in at +6 and The Bluffs were -5. Sebring Golf Club won $237 for finishing first, Golf Hammock collected $142.20 and Spring Lake pocketed $94.80. The low pro was Cory DeCoteau with a 67, and DeCoteau teamed up with John Sobecki to finish first in the pro/pro game with a 64, edging Cody Brownell and Mike Sayre who shot a 65. Sobecki, DeCoteau and Sayre each won skins, while closest-to-the-pin winners were Nancy Jarrett on hole No. 13, Susan Ellison on No. 17 and Marilyn Brewer on No. 7. The long drive winners were Nela Hodge on No. 18, Jody Ethun on No. 10, Gina Scheck on No. 9 and Jean Donahue on No. 4. The next men's Interclub event is set for July 8 at Highlands Ridge North and the next women's Interclub is on July 22 at The Bluffs. "This is a great series and playing the different courses forces you to hit different shots," DuPriest said. "That helps you to develop your golf game and enjoy playing courses you might not usually play. "We're glad to be able to host these tournaments and we're looking forward to making a run the rest of the season." mpinson@highlandstoday.com 863-386-5841
