Streaks look to rebound

The Sebring football team is anxious to get back on the field after last week's disappointing district loss to Winter Haven. The Class 6A Blue Streaks come in to tonight's homecoming game against Lely (Naples) with a 5-2 record, and a win against the Class 5A Trojans (2-5), would go a long way to restoring their confidence. "Lely has a 2-5 record, but it's very misleading,"said Sebring coach LaVaar Scott. "They have played a very tough schedule against some very good teams. They are good on both sides of the ball and we're going to have to play well. "A win would be huge for our confidence as we head into the last two games of the season."
The Trojans use a read-option offense which is something Sebring hasn't seen this year. "We haven't played against that kind of offense this season," said Scott. "It's tough to defend and it's hard to have someone try and simulate that in practice, "Lely's quarterback has run for a lot of yards and we're going to have to contain him and their backs." Sebring, which lost to a powerful Winter Haven team by a score of 43-0 last Friday, is focused on bouncing back in a big way against the Trojans. We put the Winter Haven game behind us and we've had a good week of practice," the Blue Streak coach said. "We're focused on Lely because they present a real challenge for us and we need to get back to playing winning football." Tonight's game against Lely is homecoming for the Blue Streaks. "There are a lot of things going on this week," Scott said. "We haven't won a homecoming game in the last three years and it would be great to end that streak and start a winning one." Tonight's game is a nondistrict clash, but Sebring, which will have some injured players closer to 100 percent, is looking to play a complete game on both sides of the ball. "We haven't played a complete game all season and it's time we put it all together," Scott said. "We have some guys that are banged up, but we have some others that should be ready to go." The Blue Streaks still have a chance to make the state playoffs with a win next Friday against Class 6A-District 11 rival Lake Gibson. "If we beat Lake Gibson we'll be in the state playoffs," said Scott. "It's a simple as that and we need to be playing with a lot of confidence when we go into that game." Tonight's homecoming game kicks off at 7 at Firemen's Field. We're looking forward to playing a good football team," Scott said. "It should be a big homecoming crowd and we can't wait to get on the field." mpinson@highlandstoday.com 863-386-5837 Lely at Sebring Where: Firemen's Field When: Tonight at 7 Cost: $5
