On Monday, Yates Insurance made a clean sweep of the trophy hardware for 2013 by narrowly edging Schooni’s Restaurant 18-17 in the Lake Placid Senior Softball Tournament.
Yates, regular season champions, played Schooni’s eight times, with three being the largest run differential between the two teams. Five of the games were decided by one run.
“We won these trophies as a team!” proclaimed Yates manager and defensive whiz Dick Cook as he accepted the trophies from league president Ray Hensley prior to the post-game picnic, a league tradition after the final game.
Cook speaks from experience. He started three double plays from his shortstop position, including the game ending play that wiped out the last Schooni’s rally.
Schooni’s also flashed plenty of leather during the contest. Outfielders Doran Quigg and Bill Gallagher, along with rover Mike Kratt, turned in exemplary plays in the field to thwart potential Yates scoring opportunities.
Paul Brand (two doubles, triple) and Dave Bilyea had four hits each to lead the Yates offense. Winning pitcher “Wahoo” Stanley homered to support his own cause.
For Schooni’s, “V-Rod” Rodriguez (two doubles) and “Wild Bill” DeStefano had four hits apiece. Rookies Denis Cuillerier and John McCallum both homered.
In addition to longtime President Ray Hensley, Treasurer Howard Carney also was returned to office for 2014.
Ron Hanisch will assume the duties as Vice President.
The league would like to thank Dick Card and Alan Cook for their time cooking the hot dogs and burgers for the hungry players following the games.
The league also gives thanks for the efforts by the team scorekeepers in recording statistics.
Thanks also to The Highlands Today for providing the space for the weekly results of the games.
Special appreciation goes out to the four sponsors for providing the uniforms that makes the players look like pros, even though they usually play like rank amateurs.
And kudos to Jodi Bluml for her excellent work on the league website lpsoftball.com.
