Junior Summer Tennis Camp SEBRING - The Junior Summer Tennis Camp weekly tennis camps will run through Aug. 2. The camps are for players ages 6 to 18 and all skill levels are welcome. Camps run between 9 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday and are taught by USPTA-certified Pro Horace Watkis at the Thakkar Tennis Center in the Country Club of Sebring. The cost is $100 per weekly session. Contact Watkis at 414-2164 for information or to register. Ladies Hit and Giggle SEBRING - The Ladies Hit and Giggle will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Sebring Muncipal Golf Course. Cost is $20 and includes lesson, cart and golf. The course is taught by Debby McNall, who also is available for group or private lessons and can be reached at 257-1108 or 386-9492.Firecracker 5K set for Thursday SEBRING - The 19th annual Firecracker 5K has been set for Thursday at Highlands Hammock State Park with a 7:30 a.m. start time. This year's celebration of our nation's birthday will be limited to the first 300 paid entrants. For the first time, there will be no day-of-race registration, so area runners are urged to enter early. Those desiring an entry form may contact race director Chet Brojek at email@example.com or by calling the coach at 385-4736. Entry fee is $30 through Wednesday. The race features dri-fit T-shirts; custom plaques for overall, master and grand master champions; trophies for first in age divisions and medals for second and third in 16 male and female age groups; chip timing; and plenty of post-race refreshments. The proceeds of the race benefit the boys and girls cross-country teams at Avon Park High School. Lake Placid Wee Cheer Camp LAKE PLACID - The 13th annual Lake Placid Wee Cheer Camp will take place July 22-26 at the Lake Placid gym between 9 a.m. and noon each day. On July 26, there will be a performance for family and friends. The camp is for children 3 years old through the seventh grade and the cost is $30 if preregistered, which includes a T-shirt. Participants also will cheer one quarter during the Green Dragons' varsity football game on Oct. 4. Registration forms can be picked up in the Lake Placid High School office or from any Lake Placid cheerleader. Sponsors for the camp are being sought and anybody interested can contact coach Sharon Reid at 840-1379. Sebring pool to open for summer SEBRING - The Sebring High School pool is open for public swimming. Pool hours are 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Hours will be extended once school is out for the summer. The cost is $2 per swimmer; family passes are available for $50 for the first member and $15 for each additional family member. Free drowning prevention class SEBRING - The YMCA is offering a free drowning prevention class not only for kids, but parents as well, in efforts to promote drowning awareness in Highlands County. The class will be held every Saturday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. for ages 6 months to 2 years and 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for ages 3 to 5. Sign-up is at the YMCA. You must sign up at least one week in advance. There are only 10 spots in each class. This is a one-day class that will work on survival swimming and floating.
