Playing for a cure

SEBRING - The Highlands County Tennis Association (HCTA) hosted its fourth annual Rally for the Cure tennis event at the Thakkar Tennis Center in the Country Club of Sebring on Saturday. This event raised money to support breast cancer research and education through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. The Rally for the Cure is a national program that supports the cause through sporting events like tennis and golf. Thirty-two tennis players of all levels, 20 women and 12 men, took to the courts to play eight-game matches with different partners and opponents in each round on a beautiful sun-drenched day.
The first serve of the day was by Kim Reed, a breast cancer survivor, to Karen Curry, whose mother is currently undergoing treatment. The winner of the men's division was Larry Lillard, and the women's division ended in a tie between Sandy Hollinger and Laurie Wohlers. A gift certificate for a pair of New Balance tennis shoes was awarded to the winners by the Rally for the Cure. In addition to fun tennis, participants received goodie bags, had opportunities to win prizes and drawings, and received a free annual subscription to a magazine of their choice. A delicious lunch was provided by Chicanes, Edible Arrangements, and HCTA members. We give a big thank you to them and to our other sponsors - Highlands Breast and Imaging Center, Florida Hospital, Walmart, Heartland National Bank, Florodino's Restaurant, Sun 'n Lakes Golf Club, Diva Creations by Erica, Lily Maldonado Salon, Rachel Smith Hair Therapy, and Nailz by Gloria. This event is a great way for men and women of all ages and levels of play to enjoy the game, to meet other tennis players, and to support a worthy cause. So watch for the event to be held again in October 2014!
