Youth football playoffs on tap
Highlands County Youth Football teams in the Mid Florida Football and Cheer Conference (MFFC) finished the regular season as they started it and played it all year long, in dominating fashion. The Avon Park Red Devils and the Sebring Blue Streaks finished the final week winning seven out of the eight games they played. Lake Placid had a bye this past Saturday and did not play. Highlands County teams commanded the District 5 Citrus divisions that out of the 10 teams playing in the first round of the playoffs today, seven will be teams from Highlands County. In Flag football, both Avon Park and Sebring finished their regular seasons with wins. The Red Devils beat the Heartland Hurricanes 44-0 while the Blue Streaks easily handled the Mulberry Panthers 26-8 in their last game of the season. Though the Blue Streaks were last year's Superbowl Champions, they missed the playoffs this year with a 7-3 record. Avon Park finished the season undefeated and their opponent in the first round of the playoffs will be the Frostproof Bulldogs who finished the season at 8-2. In the Mitey Mite division, Avon Park is the current three-time, Super Bowl champions for the State of Florida. But this year all have been on the Sebring Blue Streaks, who have finished the season with a perfect 10-0 while outscoring their opponents 308-0. So confident is Sebring about winning a Super Bowl, they have already made the arrangements for a victory parade in downtown Sebring, but their first hurdle will be the defending Super Bowl champion Red Devils. In the regular season match-up, Sebring beat Avon Park 21-0. In the Pee Wee division, both Avon Park and Sebring finished the season with wins and both teams finished with 9-1 records. The Red Devils took the wind out of the Heartland Hurricanes 46-0 and the Blue Streaks tamed the Mulberry Panthers 24-0. Despite both teams having 9-1 records, Avon Park won the district due to beating Sebring 21-0 earlier in the year. That will not matter much when these two teams face off in playoffs as both teams are capable of putting points on the board and have tough defenses. Avon Park outscored their opponents 359-26 and Sebring scored 208 points during the year while yielding only 64. In the Junior Division, the Sebring Blue Streaks finished the season with a 34-6 whipping of the Mulberry Panthers. Though they finished the season with a 7-3 record, they missed the playoffs as they came in third place behind the Lake Placid Green Dragons (8-1) and Avon Park Red Devils (8-2). Avon Park its final game of the season to the Heartland Hurricanes 6-0, but still made the playoffs. They will head into the first round against the Lake Placid Green Dragons. Lake Placid had a solid team, but Avon Park upset them earlier in the year by playing solid defense.
