Sunday’s rainfall was so heavy in parts of northwest Georgia that CNN Weather estimated it was a once-in-200-year event.
“Parts of Chattanooga and Floyd counties have received 10-13 inches and more rain is coming. These amounts have resulted in catastrophic flash flooding, and a flash flood emergency remains in place for the area,” the National Weather Service office in Atlanta said Sunday.
The weather service said 2 inches of rain per hour could fall through Sunday evening, with more expected Tuesday.
Due to “locally heavy rainfall” and forecast of additional rain, the Meteorological Center The “moderate” risk of heavy precipitation was upgraded to 3 out of 4 from Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a state of emergency Sunday afternoon due to severe flooding in Chattanooga and Floyd counties. According to the order, if a foot of rain falls in some places, rivers are expected to rise rapidly.
“Preliminary assessments by county emergency management agencies and the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency indicate that assistance is needed in affected counties,” the order said.
Summerville, Lyerly, and James H. Areas including Floyd State Park remain under a flash flood warning for Sunday.
“This is an especially dangerous situation. Seek higher ground now! Life-threatening flash flooding in low-water crossings, small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and sewers,” the weather service’s warning reads.
Jennifer Hurley, who owns a salon in downtown Summerville, said it took her hours to get to her business because of the flooding downtown. His salon was among the flooded businesses in the city.
The Chattanooga County Emergency Management Agency is warning residents that more rain is likely and not to venture outside.
“We’re expecting at least 2 inches of rain today and we’re asking everyone to please stay home and not travel unless absolutely necessary,” the agency said. Facebook.
