California church shooting kills one, injures five, suspects arrested

One person was killed and at least five were injured in what became known as Sunday’s shooting at a Southern California church, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a church in Geneva at 1:26 p.m. It said four of the victims were critically injured.

The body of the deceased was found at the scene, sheriff said, adding that all survivors, including one person with minor injuries, have been admitted to hospital.

Laguna Woods is a retirement community in the southern part of the county.

The Orange County Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Los Angeles-based Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Guns and Ammunition said agents based in Los Angeles were responding to Laguna Woods’ assistance to the sheriff’s investigators.

Laguna Woods and Laguna Woods Village are relatively exclusive communities for people 55 and over and their comrades or loved ones. Large areas including the village have gates.

The city consists of single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. It opened in 1964 as Leisure World. In 1999 it became the 32nd city in the district.

Authorities noted several roads were closed and asked people to avoid the area.

The church appeared to have conducted earlier services, and the streamed and television version was archived Facebook.

Rev. Ryan Romberg presided and spoke on the topic of “Celebrating the Call”.

“Everyone is welcome,” he said in his opening remarks.

He then urged the crowd to embrace people of different backgrounds and beliefs. “What would a person who loves that person do?” Romberg said.

“The way Christians have been doing it for centuries can change the world for the better,” he said.

As its representatives worked at the scene, the sheriff urged the department to be patient.
