McDonald’s said it will open a new chain, CosMc, focused on coffee and other beverages, seen as a challenge to Starbucks and Dunkin’ as the fast-food giant seeks to boost afternoon sales.
The company opened its first CosMc location in Illinois on Thursday, with plans to open additional restaurants in 2024.
Speaking at an investor presentation on Wednesday, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczynski attributed the restaurant to growing demand for the “afternoon beverage takeaway,” a $100 billion market where McDonald’s currently lacks a strong presence. . He added that the new chain will allow the company to create customized drinks that are difficult for McDonald’s restaurants to create.
The idea for CosMc is “what would happen if a McDonald’s character from the 1980s who was part alien, part surfer, part robot opened a restaurant in 2023,” Kempczynski added.

Some of the coffee drinks offered include a churro frappe, a S’mores cold brew and a spiced latte, the company said. CosMc’s will also sell non-coffee drinks including Tart Cherry Energy Burst, Blackberry Mint Green Tea and Popping Pear Slush.

Kempczynski said the chain will offer “sweet and savory treats.” These include a Spicy Queso Sandwich, Creamy Avocado Tomatillo Sandwich, Pretzel Bites and Caramel Fudge Brownies.
