OpenAI introduces a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT

“This is the first time we’ve really taken a big step forward when it comes to ease of use,” Muratti said.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, has been valued at more than $80 billion by investors. The company, founded in 2015, is under pressure to stay on top of the generative AI market while finding ways to make money as it spends huge sums on processors and infrastructure to build and train its models.

The new model has improved the quality and speed of ChatGPT for 50 different languages, and is also available via OpenAI’s API, so developers can start building apps using the new model today, Muratti said. Muratti said the GPT-4o will be twice as fast and half the price of the GPT-4 Turbo.

OpenAI team members showed off the new model’s audio capabilities, asking for help with silence ahead of a public speech. OpenAI researcher Mark Chen said the model has the ability to “feel your emotions”, adding that the model can also handle interrupting users. The team was also asked to analyze a user’s facial expressions to provide feedback on the emotions that person was experiencing.

“Hey, what’s up? How can I make your day today?” ChatGPT’s audio mode says when a user greets it.

Chen demonstrated the model’s ability to tell a bedtime story and asked her to change the tone of her voice to be more dramatic or robotic. He asked me to sing the story.

OpenAI’s new model can also act as a translator even in audio mode, the company said. Chen demonstrated the device’s ability to listen to Muratti speak Italian while he spoke English, and translate into their respective languages as they conversed.

Team members demonstrated the model’s ability to solve mathematical equations and write code, positioning it as a strong competitor to Microsoft’s own GitHub GoPilot.

As for OpenAI, this is one of the company’s biggest announcements since August’s launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, the business layer of the AI chatbot. That tool had been in development for “under a year” and had the help of more than 20 companies of various sizes and industries, OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap told CNBC at the time.

OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are at the helm of AI gold demand as companies across industries add AI-powered chatbots and agents to core services to avoid being left behind by competitors. Earlier this month, OpenAI competitor Anthropic announced its first enterprise offering and a free iPhone app.

According to Pitchbook, $29.1 billion has been invested in nearly 700 generative AI deals by 2023, a 260% increase over the previous year. The market is expected Over $1 trillion Revenue within a decade.

Some in the industry have raised concerns about the speed at which untested new services are coming to market, and academics and ethicists have lamented the technology’s tendency to spread bias.

After its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT broke the record for being the fastest growing consumer app in history and now has around 100 million weekly active users. OpenAI claims that more than 92% of Fortune 500 companies use the platform.

Muratti said during Monday’s event that OpenAI “wants to take some of the mystery out of the technology.”

“Over the next few weeks, we will roll out these capabilities to everyone,” Muratti said.

He concluded by thanking Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his company for providing the graphics processing units (GPU) needed for OpenAI’s technology.

“I want to thank the incredible OpenAI team, and Jensen and the Nvidia team for bringing us the most advanced GPUs to make this demo possible today,” he said.
