The Super Mario Bros. movie covers the Nintendo-sanctioned extended family

Super Mario Bros. Movie A small but necessary update to the larger Super Mario story, it showcases Mario and Luigi’s immediate and extended family for the first time. We have seen Previously unofficial sightings of the brothers’ fatherBut Nintendo and Illumination expanded the Mario family tree in a big way for the New Mario movie.

This was done with permission from Nintendo. The game maker also provided an appearance for Mario’s dad, who was played by a well-known voice actor in the movie, and based on Nintendo’s previously unused character designs.

Super Mario Bros. Movie Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Zelenig told Polygon that a dinner scene starring the extended Mario family was essential to the film’s storytelling.

“It goes back […] Based on the characters,” Horvath said. “We wanted to have them in a lively family dinner scene. So it’s like, Well, we need a meeting – who will be there? Mario’s mom and dad. He was going to have two uncles who looked like busting his balls. They are father’s brothers. [Uncle Arthur, played by John DiMaggio, and Uncle Tony, played by Rino Romano]and his aunt Mary.”

Mario and Luigi’s niece and their grandfather are also there, explaining to the plumbers about their new (already failed) business venture and the clothes they wear.

“Nintendo was totally open to that — they were totally into this cinematic representation of Mario, and he’d pop out of a pipe and go ‘Wahoo!’ “They knew they weren’t going to be a guy who said, ‘Then he goes on his adventure,'” Horvath said. “We had to do a little more work to make him believe that he’s a real guy with a real life and real problems. So they were all about creating this family for Mario.

“They sent us character sketches that they hadn’t used years ago; Mario’s dad was almost like a one-to-one design adaptation. [Nintendo’s] The original Mario’s Dad design they gave us. It was great to be able to get that on film. “

Horvath says the film’s character designers tweaked the design of Mario’s mom, voiced by Jessica DiCicco: “We made a few more changes to her, but she’s pretty close to their original design. Mario’s grandfather in our film looks like Mario, but like he was a boxer or something.” . . We deviated a little from the designs of some of the other family members, but Mom and Dad were very close. Very close.”
